Research grounded in questions that matter.
Healing Hearts examines emerging issues at the intersection of mental health, technology and access. Our work combines academic research with the practical perspectives developed through our community-based initiatives.
To What Extent Does the Commercialization of Digital Mindfulness Platforms Contribute to Inequalities in Access to Mental Health Resources?
Why we examined digital mindfulness.
Digital mindfulness platforms are often presented as widely accessible forms of mental health support. However, subscription fees, premium-only features, English-dominant content and unequal access to technology can determine who is actually able to benefit from them.
Our paper examines whether the commercialisation of platforms such as Headspace, Calm and Insight Timer expands access to mental health resources or reinforces existing economic, cultural and technological inequalities.
